Day 5 - February 4
Another lazy day! Surprise, surprise! I actually asked Paul why he thought it was so easy to get so much sleep here.
He thought the combination of sun, more movement, and just catching up on our sleep debt all had a part to play.
We slept in again today, and I made breakfast for Kiefer. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use stainless steel pans. I’ve heard that heating them up first and then using a high smoke-point oil does the trick, but I don’t really have a high smoke-point oil (I only have butter, and it instantly burns), so I’m just continuing to fail. Tomorrow we plan on going into town and getting some more supplies — including a non-stick pan! I also plan to make a peanut butter chocolate chip banana bread, so I need to buy a loaf pan. I figure while I have the time, I might as well do all the baking I always want to do at home but never seem to find time for.
We headed over to the restaurant for a late lunch, and Kiefer found his Panamanian friends and started playing volleyball with them. Kiefer wanted to get their contact information, but all they had was Instagram. It was quite an adventure figuring out how to add Instagram to his phone without cell service. Every app seems to want to confirm your identity with an SMS text. Well… none of us have texting down here. We finally figured it out — used my WhatsApp number — but what an ordeal!
Paul and I went for a later-night swim before dinner. Kiefer preferred to stay indoors, so we just floated around. The water was nice and warm, but once the sun went down it cooled off significantly!
Paul BBQ’d a bunch of chicken and burgers for dinner, and we ate out on the patio.
Just after we finished up dinner, our Canadian neighbor friend came over for a nice little chat. Phil and Odessa are right across the pool from us, and we met them on day two while Phil was BBQ’ing. It smelled fantastic! They’re from Haliburton.
All in all, another great day in paradise. We plan on going into town tomorrow, so we don’t want to sleep in too much — we need to miss rush hour! Panama traffic rivals Toronto!
